A comprehensive directory of national, statewide & local
resources for cancer patients and their loved ones |
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at only 32, it was the furthest thing
from my mind! Unbelievably, I didn’t even know anyone first hand with cancer
and no one in my family had experienced it either. Then suddenly people were
coming out of the woodwork with their experiences and advice - some good, some
bad.
I was one of the many patients, family members and concerned friends that
set out searching on the internet for information upon hearing a cancer diagnosis.
Sometimes what we find out there is disheartening, outdated, or plain incorrect.
How do we filter through all that in the middle of dealing with the diagnosis
itself? What resources are available before, during and after treatment?
What is out there to support families and caregivers?
As a coalition of Oklahoma health care professionals, cancer-related societies
and organizations, survivors, and others whose lives have been touched by cancer,
People Connected By Cancer wants to give you and your loved ones a head start
by providing good, reputable resources to include web links and hotline numbers.
This booklet has been developed with support from the Oklahoma Comprehensive
Cancer Control Network in conjunction with inputs from medical professionals
and support groups all over the state.
We will be continually updating this guide, so visit the People Connected
By Cancer links page at www.okpcbc.org for the most current version and more
web links.
We wish you the best on your cancer journey, and hope this guide provides
a little bit of comfort as you connect with the resources and support available
in our great state of Oklahoma.

I'm
Too Young For This! Cancer Foundation for Young Adults
http://imtooyoungforthis.org
A global support community for young adults affected by
cancer who get busy living and rock on. Our mission is to end isolation and
improve quality of life by providing one-stop access to hard to find resources,
peer support and social networks.
Planet Cancer
Young adults with cancer slip into a lonely no-man's land.
Too old for the instant community of a children's hospital, they still
don't fit in with the over-50 community that overwhelmingly populates
adult cancer wards. Because young adults with cancer are a relatively
small group, the difficulty of finding peer support is increased exponentially,
forcing many to deal in isolation with issues specific to this age and
stage of life: dating with cancer, disclosure to a potential employer,
long-term insurance issues, moving back home, loss of fertility, or having
to quit school or a newly-launched career. Planet Cancer exists so that
no young adult will have to endure such isolation again.
LIVESTRONG Young Adult
